Research interests

His main area of research is criminal behavior. He has studied factors that can be acted upon to modify it. In particular, he has analyzed how urban luminosity, the deployment of police forces, or the conditions of prisons can be elements on which intervention can be made to deter criminals, both in contexts of organized and non-organized crime. He has also studied how ex-offenders opportunities in the legal labor market can be used to deter criminal recidivism. Among his research interests is also the study of the causes of dropouts from the educational system in Uruguay. Within this area, he has evaluated the impact of extended time on the possibility of completing secondary school and the effect that perceptions of returns in the labor market have on the predisposition to complete it. Regarding methodology, he uses applied microeconometrics methods to find causal effects with observational data.

Italy, and works as an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Sciences. He is a Level I Researcher of the Sistema Nacional de Investigación. His works have been published in journals such as The Journal of Population Economics, Economía LACEA Journal, and Government Information Quarterly. He has selected projects in the Clemente Stable Fund and the Citizen Security Sector Fund, both from the National Research and Innovation Agency. He regularly referees for academic economics journals, competitive funds, and conferences. He teaches courses in quantitative methods for causal evaluation at the undergraduate and graduate levels and the Escuela de Invierno de Métodos. He is a member of the Transparency and Corruption Observatory of Uruguay of the Catholic University of Uruguay. He has advised different organizations, such as the United Nations and the Inter-American Development Bank, on the design and evaluation of public policies, among others.
