Research interests

His research has been fundamentally centered in the field of written language, specifically on the processes underlying the acquisition of reading and writing, as well as the difficulties that may arise in these processes. His interest has been in word recognition mechanisms, prosodic skills, executive functions, metacognition, and lexical retrieval with its effects on spelling. His work also focuses on the development of assessment techniques in written language, the creation of evidence-based intervention and teaching programs, as well as studies on the prevalence, comorbidity, and subtypes of reading deficits.

Personal profile

He obtained his Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Murcia, with postdoctoral studies at the University of Granada. He has a master's degree in Educational Psychology and is a Specialist in Learning Difficulties; with a bachelor's degree in psychology. He is a Level II Member of the National Researchers System and the director of the Department of Neuroscience and Learning. He supervises master's and doctoral theses and teaches at the undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels. He is the president of the Latin American Society of Neuropsychologyand the vice president of the Uruguayan Society of Neuropsychology. He has been a Specialist Consultant for UNESCO and the Ibero-American Organization of States (OEI) for the study of written language programs. He reviews academic journals in the field, and acts as an accreditor for universities in Colombia, Bolivia, Chile, Peru, and Paraguay. His work in teaching and research has been accompanied by managerial roles such as director of undergraduate and postgraduate programs, dean, and academic vice-rector.
