Dr. Luis Ubillos graduated as a medical doctor in Montevideo, Uruguay. He obtained his specialist degree in Medical Oncology at the same University and later obtained his PhD in the area of cancer immunology. He currently holds the position of coordinator of the Medical Oncology Unit of the British Hospital of Montevideo and is Director of the Department of Medicine of the Catholic University of Uruguay. He is a member and former president of the Society of Medical and Pediatric Oncology of Uruguay (SOMPU) as well as an active member of several international societies (ASCO, AACR and ESMO). He is an active member of several research projects and his main interests are cancer immunology and the search for prognostic and predictive markers. He has published several works linked to glycosylation and cancer, as well as the search for potential antigens for use as active immunotherapy.
Research interests
My main areas of interest are the search for prognostic and predictive molecular markers in cancer treatment, as well as active immunotherapy strategies in preclinical models. Within the identification of prognostic and predictive markers, my work in the context of translational research has focused on the study of O-glycosylation antigens and enzymes as evidenced in the publications. Immunotherapy has clearly been one of the most important advances in the treatment of cancer in recent years, in this area I have also developed lines of active immunotherapy models. The historic advances that have been made in cancer control worldwide are clearly linked to the development of immunotherapy and the better selection of patients with molecular markers. Both areas of development are current and of potential clinical importance.
