Personal profile

I received my degree in Electrical Engineering from Universidad de la Republica (2011) and my Ph.D. in Engineering (2015). I studied and worked at the Ecole Normale Superieure Paris-Saclay and maintained collaborations with the institution. Since 2017, I lived and worked in the US as a full-time professor at Duke University. I am a Full Professor at Universidad Catolica del Uruguay and an adjunct professor at Duke University. I published over 50 scientific (peer-reviewed) works on venues such as Nature Medicine, Nature Scientific Reports, TPAMI, and Journal of Pattern Recognition, among other prestigious venues. Our work in early autism detection was highlighted by the NIH as one of the top 5 scientific discoveries in human health in 2023.

Research interests

My expertise includes artificial intelligence (AI) and computer vision (CV). My research interests and works include (i) computer vision and artificial intelligence for personalized and precise healthcare, (ii) image processing, image understanding, and image enhancement, (iii) facial analysis and CV-based behavioral phenotyping, and (iv) theory and applications for fraud detection and AI imbalanced problems.
