The ‘Accessibility Turn’ in Urban Research: Contributions from Latin America and the Global South

The world is increasingly urban, but the governance and administration of urban areas is growing in complexity. This is posing critical challenges for urban policy. One such policy challenge is providing equitable access to the resources offered by urban areas to their inhabitants. Aiming to expand the discussion of this crucial issue of cities, the Latin American chapter of the International Network for Transport and Accessibility in Low-Income Communities (INTALInC-LAC) called for papers to be included in a special issue of Area Development and Policy. The aims of the special issue are twofold. First, promoting a dialogue among studies from diverse geographies facing similar accessibility challenges. Second, advancing debates about the policy implications of accessibility research in different geographical contexts. Through its eight articles, this special issue contributes to a more global conversation about urban accessibility. It provides empirical and policy insights from different contexts to explore policy solutions for more equitable access to urban services and resources.
