Abstract

Assessing empathy has been carried out through different self-report scales that study the affective or cognitive aspects of the construct. Despite the current acceptance of multidimensional scales, it has been suggested that it is possible to assess an underlying general dimension, the Toronto Empathy Questionnaire (TEQ), a technique developed for this purpose. This study analyzed the psychometric properties of the TEQ in a sample of 200 Uruguayan adults (100 women, 100 men). The exploratory factor analysis showed a good fit for the one-dimensional model. By eliminating 10 items, essential unidimensionality is reached. The results suggest that the Spanish version of the TEQ is a valid scale for the study population. A revision of the formulation of the inverted ítems and the validity of the reduced 6-ítem version is suggested.
