title = "Algebraic geometry and sums of squares",
abstract = "We give a self-contained introduction to the geometry of real projective varieties. We then study the relationship between nonnegative polynomials and sums of squares on such varieties and explain a recent geometric characterization of projective varieties for which these two concepts coincide. This characterization unifies and explains several well-known theorems and connects sums of squares with one of the cornerstones of classical algebraic geometry, the classification of varieties of minimal degree.",
