Resumen
European Nazi-fascist ideas found their way in Uruguay in the 1930s thanks o the support by some conservative and catholic groups. The Uruguayan society of the time was fairly polarized and these allowed Dr. Gabriel Terra to gain the necessary support to change the constitution and harden the immigration laws in order to hinder the entry of Old World refugees, either Communists or Jews. There was, on the other hand, a considerable number of democrats and solidary people who were able to put a stop to those latent Nazi-Fascist trends. They tried to assist refugees by granting them visas or turning a deaf ear to many decrees and regulations which would have made their entry through regular channels impossible.
